The purpose of this blog is to discuss classic and new science fiction and fantasy books as I read them. I've loved SF (and fantasy) from the first time I set eyes on the classic SF treatment of Shakespeare in the 1956 film Forbidden Planetone rainy Saturday at age 10. Bee Girl is a celebration and exploration of how the SF and fantasy genres expand and develop ideas about what it means to be human and to be an individual. Why Bee Girl? What can I say? I like bees, and B-movies have their place both in the genre and in my heart, up to and including such deeply-B classics as The Wasp Woman that actually conceptualize what it means to be a bee and a girl (or a middle-aged woman). At the same time.
I'm a firm believer that most people would rather look at cute kitten pictures than read my resume, so I'll keep it brief. I have a Master's in English and a varied background in literature, books, writing, and teaching, plus a particular interest in and love of science fiction and fantasy-from its roots to the present day.
